Throwback to wild camping in the Sahara in Tunisia 🇹🇳. That was easily one of the coldest nights I’ve had on this trip. temps dropped below 5. @elinewijstma went full superhuman and slept outside - I guess a good sleeping bag goes a long way hahah. @jetrakettt and I were not brave enough to embrace the cold and we set up are tents. I climbed into my sleeping bag and shivered all night long haha but what an experience 😅

there is a train.

Not for comfort.
Not for speed.

Three and a half kilometers of iron and dust,
cutting through one of the harshest places on Earth.

It carries ore from the heart of the desert,
and those who live among the whispers of the sand.

this train is not a journey.

It is a lifeline.

One of the few steep hills here in Tunisia, Piste Rommel, is an old WWII mountain track carved into the Redeyef–Gafsa mountains of southwest Tunisia. It was used by the Axis forces — mainly German and Italian troops under a dude named Erwin Rommel — as they moved through North Africa during the final stages of the desert campaign. The Ally’s were closing in on them and their only way was to retreat south.

This route gave them a somewhat hidden passage through the mountains as they tried to escape the tightening pressure of the Allied advance. Today it’s just dust, cliffs, super steep sections and quiet desert wind… but it’s wild to imagine tanks, convoys, and soldiers once moved along the same path we cycled on.

DIY fix a broken a rack! Boy Scouts really came in handy hey😅👼. Pretty simple fix for something that could be disastrous on the road. Back home I probably would’ve just replaced the rack but something this journey has really thought me is to be resourceful. There’s almost always a solution and when you don’t have access to the right tools or new products….well…. Make a plan bruh!

At @samana.valley , it’s a small team with a mammoth of a task. Six weeks of moving through the groves, tree by tree, harvesting every branch by hand. It’s a massive effort, and honestly, a seriously impressive one.

What makes it beautiful is the people. The way everyone comes together, working side by side, connected to the land and to each other. It’s easy to see why Tunisians look forward to this season

Interesting fact: Tunisia is the 5th biggest producer of olive oil in the world and the biggest in Africa.

Grateful to witness it.

1050km. 13 days. 11 days riding, 2 days pretending to rest hahah.

A mate had been wanting to join for a section of my ride for a long time, and with two weeks off between jobs, the timing finally lined up. We were meant to do this in Morocco, but with the embassy taking forever, I just said, “Screw it — let’s ride in Tunisia instead.” Honestly… best decision we could’ve made. Things just worked out, and she flew in.

On day 3 we met another cyclist in Gafsa, and she joined for the rest of the trip. We rode through some of the most insane landscapes, through one of the largest marine outcrops in Africa, crossed ancient Amazigh villages, slept in a ksar, and camped under the stars in the Sahara.

Southern Tunisia is out of this world. As you sail down from the capital a beautiful silence fills the air. Landscapes stretch into the fading horizon and the stars come out to dance at night.

Riding with two absolute legends was exactly what I needed and I’m forever grateful — and it’s left me fired up for the next section of the expedition.

This trip was one for the books. Tunisia… you were magic. 🇹🇳🌍🔥

As you can tell from the amount of times I said epic, I had a great time in Hawassa. Hawassa is an incredibly beautiful town located 295km south of Addis Ababa. If you you ever visit Ethiopia I would highly recommend visiting Hawassa, even if it’s just to drink a juice!😂

Way up in the Ethiopian highlands, 2000m above sea level. The air is thin, the hills are endless, and the beauty is beyond words.

I stopped to capture the landscape when this gentleman stepped out of the bushes, walked a few meters, and struck a pose with the most radiant smile. We greeted, exchanged nothing more than presence, and parted ways—but the moment stayed with me all day in the form of an endless smile 😊 .

A brief encounter, a beautiful soul, and a reminder of the beauty found on the open road.

An ode to northern Kenya.

There is a magical silence in Northern Kenya that feels alive. It wraps its arms around you, holds you close until your heartbeat sings louder than the whistling of the winds. Time seems to stands still, and with every pedal stroke you begin to feel more alive - almost born again.

When you drop down from Marsabit the landscape changes into desert. Yet 125km later, the landscape bursts into a million shades of green, each bush and field glowing with life.

Aside from being chased by guys with machetes near Marsabit. Every interaction - whether with the young or the old - carried a special stillness, kindness and connection to the land unlike anything I had seen.

The +300km I cycled through in this region is a section I will never forget.
